2014 Summer Course Descriptions (Course #1 to #15):


1. 1-to-1 private tutoring of any subjects

Incl. SAT, SAT II, ACT and any school subjects; available 1, 1.5 or 2 hours per lesson with flexible schedule. This course is available for all time periods incl. weekends.


2. SAT Verbal class (incl. critical reading & writing sections)

This two-week course meets approx. two hours per day and prepares students for both the SAT and PSAT exams. Over the course of the 20 hours, students will learn both the skills and strategies to succeed on the verbal sections of the test. By the end of the two weeks, all students will possess the confidence and know-how to maximize their individual performance on the SAT exam. This course will be offered in a couple of two-week sessions (Session 1 to 4) or 1 one-week session (Session 5/week 9th either AM or PM classes) or Saturday only classes. Each session has time frame option from Period 1 to 6.

We suggest you to take Course #3 "SAT Math" also if you would like to improve your math score.

"SAT II English" will be available for 3-4 small group class only ($800 per 2-week session).

● Every 2nd Thursday of each 2-week session, a proctored 4-hour SAT mock exam will be held for current students either from 8 am to 12 pm or from 1 pm to 5 pm. The last lesson (2nd Friday) of each 2-week SAT session will be a Q&A class for the students to discuss the mock exam they took a day before.

● For Session 5 - one week session (week-9 Monday-Friday either AM or PM classes), the mock exam will be held on the Thursday from 8 am to 12 pm for AM class and from 1 pm to 5 pm for PM class.

● For Session 6-AM & Session 6-PM (5-week Saturday only classes), the mock exam will be held on the 4th Saturday from 8 am to 12 pm for the AM class and from 1 am to 5 pm for the PM class. For Session 6-1 to 6-4(2-hour/lesson/week) students, the mock exam will be held on the 8th Saturday either AM or PM.

● Other than the scheduled mock exam for each session, additional practice tests are also available for current SAT students on Sunday 8/3, 8/10, 8/17 and 8/24 from 1 pm to 5 pm (without additional charge).

3. SAT Math class

This two-week course meets approx. two hours per day and prepares students for both the SAT and PSAT exams. 4. CTY SAT (For students entering grades 6 - 8)

Similar to Course #1: Standard SAT class but concentrated in math and reading parts only because CTY only considers the Mathematics and Critical Reading sections for awards and course eligibility.


5. Pre-Algebra (For students entering grades 6 - 8)

This 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks course will provide students with an opportunity to strengthen their basic mathematical skills, while working on an introduction to algebra. Students will be introduced to the algebra concepts of integers, equations, inequalities, and exponents; there is also a unit on informal geometry.

● You may sign on 1 session only or additional 1, 2, or 3 session(s) for this course. Each session is 2 weeks long with a 2-hour class per weekday for a total of 20 hours. The tuition for each additional session will be the same $250 for 7-15 group or $500 for 3-6 group. A minimum of 6-week (3 continuing sessions) is recommended but not required.

● This course is available for all time periods if we have enough registrants.


6. Algebra I (For students entering grades 7 - 9)

This 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks course will cover algebra in one and two variables through the solution of quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, and by formula. This course will stress the structure and logical development of mathematics. Students enrolling in this course should have completed Pre-Algebra.

● You may sign on additional 1, 2, or 3 session(s) for this course. Each session is 2 weeks long with a 2-hour class per weekday for a total of 20 hours. The tuition for each additional session will be the same $250 for 7-15 group or $500 for 3-6 group. A minimum of 6-week (3 continuing sessions) is recommended but not required.

● This course is available for all time periods.


7. Geometry (For students entering grades 8-10)

This 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks course will cover plane geometry with elements of analytic and solid geometry, nature of proof, development of theorems from definitions and axioms, constructions, original exercises and numerical examples, analytic geometry of the straight line, and the circle. Students enrolling in this course should have completed Algebra 1.

● You may sign on additional 1, 2, or 3 session(s) for this course. Each session is 2 weeks long with a 2-hour class per weekday for a total of 20 hours. The tuition for each additional session will be the same $250 for 7-15 group or $500 for 3-6 group. A minimum of 6-week (3 continuing sessions) is recommended but not required.


8. Algebra II with Trigonometry (For students entering grades 9-11)

This 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks Algebra II course, students will study functions and expand on the concepts covered in Algebra I, and many of the concepts covered in Geometry. Topics covered are: linear and quadratic equations and functions; systems of equations and inequalities; polynomials and rational polynomial expressions; polynomial functions; conic sections; exponential and logarithmic functions; probability and statistics. Satisfactory completion of this course prepares students for entry into Pre-Calculus or Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry.

9. Pre-Calculus (For students entering grades 10-11)

This 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks course will review and study intermediate algebra, analytic geometry, function and inverse function, log and exponential functions, trigonometry, complex induction, limits, continuity, and derivatives of polynomials. Students will be required to have a graphing calculator. Students enrolling in this course should have completed Algebra II and Trigonometry.

● You may sign on additional 1, 2, or 3 session(s) for this course. Each session is 2 weeks long with a 2-hour class per weekday for a total of 20 hours. The tuition for each additional session will be the same $250 for 7-15 group or $500 for 3-6 group. A minimum of 6-week (3 continuing sessions) is recommended but not required.


10. Calculus (For students entering grades 11-12)

This 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks course will follow the curriculum of the AP Exam as defined by ETS. Topics will include analytic geometry, along with both differential and integral calculus. The course will spend a fair amount of time on the applications of the calculus. Students will be required to have a graphing calculator. Students enrolling in this course should have completed Pre-Calculus.

11. Middle School Literature Workshop
(For students entering grades 6-8)

Through lectures, readings, class discussions, and writing assignments, students will be engaged in the study of formal structures, thematic associations, and modes of expression in various types of literature. This two-week course will explore novels, plays, non-fictional and fictional short stories, and journalistic-type prose. Students will develop their skills of close reading and analytical writing, regardless of skill level. The course will promote vocabulary, word usage, style, organization, mechanics, logic, and revision skills essential to each student’s academic success. Students will also learn how best to employ structure at the sentence, paragraph, and essay level.

● Texts used in each session will vary, so you may register for one or all sessions without repetition of course materials.
● These two-week sessions meet Monday through Friday, lasting for two hours each lesson.


12. High School Advanced Writing Workshop (For students entering grades 9-12)

This two-week course fosters student improvement in essay-writing ranging from SAT essay preparation, high school writing development, and composing college entrance-essays. The intention of this course is to provide students with new abilities in the examination and composition of expository-style essays, argumentation techniques, descriptive writing exercises, narrative voice development, and persuasive writing. Instructors emphasize the study of audience, rhetoric, diction, sentence construction, paragraph continuity, and thesis statement support- writing skills necessary for academic success at the high school and college-levels.

● Texts used in each session will vary, so you may register for one or all sessions without repetition of course materials.
● These two-week sessions meet Monday through Friday, lasting for two hours each lesson.

14. ACT classes

Available upon request: Course #14-1 ACT Math, #14-2 ACT Reading/Writing and #14-3 ACT Science. Each course is a 2-week/20-hour program in Session 1 to 4. Session 5 (8/25 - 8/29) offers a 1-week/20-hour program for 4-hour lesson time per day. Session 6 is Saturday ONLY class.
